Hi Techies,
Well, we're officially in the thick of it. It's that time of year where some of your classmates have experienced great success in recruiting, others are stuck in limbo after their interviews, and many others are still in recruiting purgatory.
First off, congratulations to your classmates who have already succeeded in their recruiting ambitions. It's been wonderful to speak with some of you and offer advice about choosing the right company or negotiations. You should be incredibly proud of your self-earned success.
To everyone else: take a breath, and feel assured that there is still plenty of time left to find a full-time role or internship before the end of the semester. Many big tech companies have extended their interviews and offers for the season, but just-in-time hiring and adhoc postings are just starting to pick up. Refresh your Google Job Alerts and LinkedIn notifications -- the game's not over until it's over, and I'm still incredibly confident in your success.
In this monthly (or so) email series, I'll offer some insight into upcoming events, underlying strategic goals, and highlight some important updates.
Why does it feel like HTA events have disappeared?
To an extent, they have! We're working on bringing some great companies and guests to campus and collaborating on an exciting tech summit, but the majority of our training events have completed for the year. Our events calendar for the year is split into 4 seasons:
- August-September: Career Exploration
- October-December: Training
- January-March: Interviews
- April-May: Career Success
Fall semester events are geared towards helping members find their industry and function fit, then providing the training and resources to help you successfully achieve your goals. In Spring, especially during interview season, we shift towards a greater community focus.
Starting with our interview prep session held during January, and continuing with Recruiting Office (Happy) Hours, this time is all about helping you connect with your classmates. Everyone has stories of recruiting challenges and successes, and the open secret is that the more you share with your classmates and find opportunities to collaborate together, the greater the chance of shared and individual success.
So: come to ROHHs, reach out to your classmates to interview prep together, and be candid with each other about where your recruiting journey is. Who knows, maybe the person wearing an HTA shirt the table over has the same interview coming up, and is the perfect person to practice with! I promise that recruiting is a lot less painful when you have a community and great friends to fall back on.
Where can I find training materials and resources?
As much as we've been able to, all HTA events have been recorded and made available here. Casebooks and casing training sessions are all available here. Our RocketBlocks subsidy continues to be available to members, as well as our subsidized 1:1 professional coaching program (available here).
HTA casing is self-driven, and I understand that there has been some frustration with feedback and understanding where to improve. The casing team and I, plus the board in general, are always here to help. Reach out for 1:1 feedback or casing practice sessions, while also taking advantage of peer coaches on MCSO, booking appointments with GCS career liaisons, and asking for time with your classmates.
What happens after recruiting season?
As we move into April and May, HTA will host a series of workshops designed to help you succeed in your summer internships and full-time roles. These will include guidance on how to approach your first few weeks in the job, what a great summer presentation might look like, and tips on how to avoid imposter syndrome.
In addition to these events, HTA-subsidized professional licenses and certificates will be available in the coming weeks. Details are still being fleshed out, but members will be able to enroll in any certificate or license program and submit their program fees for reimbursement.
What do HTA elections look like?
We're quickly coming up on transition season to the 2022-23 board, and first up is the appointment of HTA president. Tomorrow morning through Tuesday, February 22, the HTA President application will be available. There is no prerequisite of having served as a board member: if you're part of HTA and have a vision for next year, we'd love to hear from you.
After the president is appointed, VP applications will open, and your 2022-23 board will be announced in April.
In closing, good luck to everyone who is still recruiting and huge congratulations to those of you who have already secured your full-time roles or summer internships. The HTA board is always open to feedback and here to help. Reach out to any board member you feel comfortable speaking to, and we're always happy to offer our time and energy.
See you at the next ROHH!
Sincerely,
Benson Lao
HTA President (2021-22)
