“A city (campground) in the desert. A culture of possibility (how late can I stay up dancing tonight?). A network of dreamers and doers (yes, you can take this weekend off. You will get a job or internship, we promise).”

The Event - Burning Marshall [Halloweekend] 2017

The premier fall event hosted by the Marshall Outdoor Club.

What: 2 days of camping/drinking/hiking/dancing just outside of Joshua Tree National Park (about 2-2.5 hour drive from campus)

When: Halloween Weekend. Campsite opens at 5pm, Friday, October 27th (after attending JA in a Day) and will wrap up Sunday morning, October 29th.

Why: Nature is beautiful. People at Marshall are fun. Let’s combine the two for one of the best times of fall semester. You’ll come back with new friends, appreciation for California, and unforgettable (or forgotten) memories.

Fair warning: this is NOT a strictly “I will be hiking all day, eating granola and jerky and going to bed at sundown to rise for tomorrow’s journey”. There will be plenty of opportunities to do outdoors activities (see below), but this is for all levels of campers: those who want to sit at the campsite all day, drinking mimosas and playing cornhole, or those who want to venture into the national park and get their belay line on.

Preparation

We will follow up with more information on this later. But if you’ve never been camping, Lyons rec center has plenty of equipment (tents, sleeping bags, etc) for you to rent. If you don’t have a car, we will be circulating a carpool document.

Joshua Tree Guide

Also coming soon. There will be an organized hike led by a professional guide, and we will also provide maps/materials for you to venture on your own during the day, safely!

Art and Performance

As the sun goes down, the fun really starts. Bring out your costumes and best dance moves as we party under the light of the moon. Dance circles are highly popular, drinking games encouraged, and expect sing-alongs to all genres of music.

Theme Camps and Villages

Start chatting with your closest fellow burners and determine who you want in your camp. Share tents, sleeping bags, or a general area of space on the campground. Remember, this is Halloween weekend. Plan group costumes or roll solo, but no matter what, bring a sense of humor, creativity, glow sticks and glitter to energize yourself and those around you!

THIS IS JUST A PREVIEW. Don’t worry, we will communicate many more details after you’re signed up. If you need any convincing, feel free to reach out to your favorite MOC board member with any questions you have.

Your ticket will get you the following:

5 Meals: Friday Dinner, 3 meals Saturday and Breakfast Sunday, (we're planning on a food truck for Saturday night)
Time of your life with peers from both classes
Hiking and getting lost in the hills
Epic Experiences
Plates and Utensils
Snacks
Firewood
A prize for the most ridiculous wig/hat/headpiece/headgear/helmet/etc. seen Friday night
Hand Sanitizer

PS: there are a lot of jokes in this email that are related to a giant festival in the Nevada desert called Burning Man. If you haven’t heard of it before, you can look it up (here).
