Club Names Changes

We highly discourage you from changing your organization's name. We have found that Marshall student organization names communicate the true intent of each club over the long term. Changing your name to reflect a current trend or hot topic in business may be attractive now, but may not be appropriate in three, five or even 10 years. Additionally the name change process involves several, somewhat complex, administrative tasks for you to complete.

If you absolutely feel that changing your organization's name is essential to accurately expressing the true intent and mission of your group, your first step is to write up a proposal for the change, indicating why you think the name change is critical. The proposal should include supporting evidence and benchmark data from other business school organizations. Your proposal should be submitted to your staff liaisons for consideration. You will need to meet with your staff liaisons to discuss the proposed name change.

Once you and your staff liaisons have agreed to move forward with your name change, please be advised that there are a number of administrative steps you will need to complete.  These steps must be completed by September 1 to ensure a successful transition.

  • New bank account - you will no longer be able to deposit checks into your bank account using your new organization name. You will need to open a new bank account at the USC Credit Union. You should request a student organization new account packet, complete the forms in the packet, and submit the completed forms to the Credit Union for processing.
    • - Please note: you will need your organization's tax ID number.  If you cannot locate your tax ID number or don't know if you have one, you will need to apply for a new tax ID # through the IRS website.  When you apply for a tax ID # (also known as an Employer Identification Number or EIN), you will be required to enter your Social Security Number.  This is an extra security measure taken by the IRS to ensure the person requesting the number has a legitimate request.  Your SSN will not be saved or linked to your organization's EIN in any way.
    • - Once your new bank account is open, you should close your old account.
  • New email address - your organization's email address will need to be deleted and a new address created.  Please reach out to Kat Lopez at kathleen.lopez@marshall.usc.edu to request a new email address.
  • New PayPal account - since your PayPal account is tied to your club email account and linked to your old bank account, you will need to close your PayPal account and open a new account with the new club email. Please see the "How to Set Up a PayPal Business Account for Marshall USC (CampusGroups)" instructions on the Documents page of this website for information about how to properly open a PayPal business account for your club.
    - Once you have a new PayPal account, you will need to link your new PayPal account to your new bank account in order to receive your dues.
    - Rebrand all public facing collateral materials, including logo, website (Campus Groups) and printed materials.
